Lorraine Botterill, professional chainsaw carver discusses why she uses ECHO saws to help her achieve the level of detail she needs when producing her commissions especially her recent 4m dragonfly in the latest issue of the ECHO blog.

“As a sculptor based in Sheffield, I have recently done a large project for Derbyshire Wildlife Trust for their Hilton Gravel Pits site near Burton on Trent. These 3 pieces were a gateway arch depicting the lifecycle of the newt with timber framing type construction prior to carving, a large bench with otters and great crested grebe and a giant 4m dragonfly with a 5m wingspan as a climb-on/ seat. The cedar dragonfly body was built in 2 sections with a mortise & tenon joint, the legs in oak sections with steel reinforcing bars to allow them to be stepped on and the wings also in cedar with recessed veins allowing water to drain. I had to use steel support legs to fix it into the ground. Producing all 3 to be delivered and installed on the same day was a challenge of logistics and work space.

Having the right tools to do the job is critical. I use mainly ECHO saws and currently own 6 of them. As you have read, the commission from the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust was a very large carve with differing level of detail required. The CS-361WES and CS-281WES are my go to saws for achieving definition and detailing, and my CS-501SX is my main roughing out saw. I find ECHO saws to be very reliable, which is a necessity as I can’t afford to be experiencing downtime especially when I’m doing carves that are time bound.

ECHO saws are designed and built to be well balanced. I’m often carving for long periods of time and it can be intense so I need a saw that is comfortable to use yet still offers the levels of power I need. My saws are my livelihood as a professional chainsaw carver and I use them most days. ECHO saws are the dependable choice!”
